I had a dream the other night that I was having lunch with PPAC’s President and CEO Lynn Singleton and he let me on a big secret: Trinity Rep’s 48th production of “A Christmas Carol” was going to be presented on the PPAC stage this year.

I woke up thinking, “What a great idea. Trinity Rep is renovating its upstairs theatre and is looking for a place to perform its popular and lucrative annual show.”

Then I realized that it was only a dream. “Hamilton” was scheduled to take over the PPAC stage Dec. 11-22.

The following day an email came from PPAC: An “unprecedent announcement” was scheduled for July 25 in the PPAC lobby.

I arrived to find the lobby decorated with a Christmas tree and Christmas cookies and candy.

PPAC’s Chairman, Warwick’s own, Joe Walsh made the announcement: Trinity Rep’s “A Christmas Carol” is coming to the Providence Performing Arts Center!

Singleton, undoubtably the best arts negotiator in the country, having brought the best of the best Broadway shows to Providence, negotiated with the producers of “Hamilton” to adjust the dates so that Scrooge will take a brief hiatus to make room for the national tour of “Hamilton,” which is making its third visit to Rhode Island.

The unprecedented partnership is a shining example of the cooperative spirit among members of the arts community in Rhode Island.

Resident company member Tatyana-Marie Carlo will direct the production and promises a “joyous celebration of community, redemption and Christmas cheer.”

Who will play Scrooge? Stay tuned for the coming announcement.

The Trinity Rep-PPAC collaboration allows more seats, giving more people the opportunity to see the classic play, which changes a bit every year, while never changing the spirit of Dickens’ words.

“A Christmas Carol” runs Nov. 23-Dec. 4, followed by a brief hiatus for “Hamilton,” then continues Dec. 26-29.

Tickets go on sale for Trinity Rep subscribers on July 29, to PPAC subscribers on Aug. 5 and to the public on Aug. 19. They will be available online at www.ppacri.org, by phone at 421-2787 or in person at the PPAC box office.
