Throughout reading week, students at Woodridge Elementary School had many special visitors to read a story or share their own stories. There was one visitor however, who brought the most unusual guests to visit. Ray Ward, from Bwana Iguana Reptile Adventure performed two shows at the school recently.
Ward’s interactive, attention-getting, hands-on presentation kept the students at rapt attention as he introduced one reptile guest after another, from tortoises to snakes to lizards. Throughout his show, Ward was sure to not only present just the reptile itself, but to tell the students all of the features of that reptile, such as skin type or shell type and leg length. The students also were able to learn about where the reptiles originated from and what types of habitats they prefer. After each guest was introduced and discussed, Ward was sure to check back in with the students to see if they remembered all that he’d told them. Ward also utilized student volunteers to help him throughout the presentation, allowing the students to help hold or pick up a particular reptile. As a culminating activity of each show, Ward went through the crowd, allowing all who wished, the opportunity to safely touch a snake.
