The Cranston West boys basketball team remains in the Division II playoff hunt as it has turned things around after dropping five straight games earlier this month. The Falcons snapped the skid when they beat South Kingstown last week, then followed it up by getting a 62-39 win at home over Chariho.
Senior captain Noah Germain was dominant in the win over the Chargers, leading the team with a game-high 17 points. Nate Conca added 12 and Josh Silva 10 in the win as well.
“The first (few losses of the streak) were rough but we knew that if we just worked hard we’d be able to climb the standings,” said Germain, who credited his teammates for helping him fill the stat sheet in the win. “I just felt it tonight. My team was being unselfish, we were just flowing and I wasn’t trying too hard to get a bucket. I just tried passing it a lot,” said Germain.
The Falcons got off to a strong start this season, especially considering that they have a brand new starting lineup this season. Germain was one of the few players that saw significant varsity minutes last year, and he has been excited to see the emergence of some of the younger players as they look to reach the postseason.
“It’s incredible how many people have stepped up. A few guys that didn’t get minutes last year have proven you can do it if you work hard. Everybody, all the underclassmen,” said Germain.
The Falcons fell to unbeaten, first place Moses Brown last weekend to settle in at 5-8 in the division. The team had another tough test when it faced third place West Warwick on Wednesday, but the results were unavailable at press time.
West will have its chances down the stretch to improve its playoff positioning, with winnable games against teams like Middletown, Tiverton, St. Ray’s, Cranston East and Johnston on tap.
Staying hungry and playing as a team will be key for West to keep this momentum in the final weeks, according to Germain.
“It (will be) about our drive, we just want to win. We want to go all the way,” Germain said. “Our togetherness, if we keep cheering each other on and working together, we’re going to go far.”
