STOLEN STRIP STEAK

On June 15 at approximately 5:33 p.m., Officers William Reiff and Officer William Holz were dispatched to the Warwick Avenue Shaw’s Supermarket for a report of a shoplifting in progress.

At the scene they met with the store’s loss prevention officer who had the suspect, later identified as Lawrence Evans, 48, of 79 Sorrento St. in Providence, in custody. The loss prevention officer explained that he observed Evans select two packages of meat from the meat department and then conceal them in a large backpack. He then allegedly exited the store without making an attempt to pay for the items. He was escorted back into the store, where $79.32 worth of strip steak was recovered.

Officers spoke with Evans, who reportedly was very apologetic and stated that he was forced to commit shoplifting. He stated that it was his son’s birthday, and that he was trying to do something nice for him. He was charged with one count of shoplifting and one count as a habitual offender. He was held at police headquarters due to probation violations.

DRIVING UNDER THE INFLUENCE

On June 9 around 8:57 p.m. Officer Brian Holleran reported that he was investigating a series of larcenies from automobiles at Kent Hospital when a security guard informed him that a man was observed by security on video to be unstable on his feet. The suspect then entered the driver’s side of a silver Honda Civic.

Officer Holleran then observed a vehicle matching the provided description exit from the parking lot, which proceeded to almost run over a driveway divide sign as it was attempting to exit. The officer then yelled for the operator to stop, which he did. Contact was then made with the driver, identified as Steven Parker, 48, of 58 Arnold St. in Lincoln.

While speaking with Parker, Officer Holleran reported a strong odor of alcohol emanating from the car, while small bottles of Jim Beam and open cans of Bud Light were in plain view on the passenger seat. Parker stated that he did not have his driver’s license but was heading home after falling asleep in the parking lot.

When asked if he had anything to drink, Parker allegedly replied that he had earlier in the day. He was asked to step from his vehicle and take a series of standardized sobriety tests, which he agreed to. Based upon the officer’s observations and training, it was determined that Parker was unfit to operate a motor vehicle safely. He was taken into custody and transported to police headquarters. At the station, he agreed to take a chemical breathalyzer test, which produced blood alcohol readings of .289 and .278 percent. He was charged with driving under the influence, second offense, and driving with a suspended license. He was then transported to Kent Hospital for detox.

KEYED CAR

Officer Rose Michael met with a complainant in the lobby of the Warwick Police Department Headquarters on June 12 at approximately 1:10 p.m. for a malicious damage report.

The woman stated that someone used a key to scratch her car sometime between the hours of 5:50 p.m. on June 11 and 6:45 a.m. on June 12. The woman said her vehicle was parked in the lot of her residence at the Briarwood Meadow Apartments during the time of the incident.

Officer Michel observed a horizontal scrape mark that was approximately nine inches long. The report was forwarded to department detectives for review.

STOLEN TIRES

On June 13 at approximately 8:07 a.m., Officer Michael Walker responded to the Bald Hill Dodge on Bald Hill Road for a report of tires stolen from a vehicle.

At the dealership the officer spoke with the reporting party, who said that when he arrived at work he observed a 2013 Ford F350 in the back parking lot that was leaning to the left. Upon closer inspection he found that all four tires had been taken from the truck, and that part of the truck was resting on wood wile the rest of the truck was on the ground. Both rims and tires had been taken from the vehicle.

According to the employee, the dealership lot was locked. The dealership wishes to press charges if a suspect is found.

STOLEN CLUBS

At approximately 11:35 a.m. on June 13, Officers Albert Marano and Ben Bratko met with a man at police headquarters who stated that his golf clubs were stolen from his vehicle in front of his residence on Eagle Run Street.

The man stated that he had locked his golf clubs in the bed of his truck on June 11, and when he went to golf he noticed they had been stolen. He estimated the total value of the stolen clubs was $3,320. There are currently no suspects, but the man indicated that he wished to press charges should a suspect be found.

POSSESSION

On June 15 at approximately 6:13 p.m., Officer Ali Jafaar was in a stationary position parked at the Post Road Haxton’s Liquors. At that time, he reported that he observed a vehicle pass him in the northbound lane with what appeared to be a large windshield obstruction in the form of multiple air fresheners and a headset hanging from the rearview mirror. Officer Jafaar also reported that as the driver approached and noticed the officer’s presence, he immediately hit his brakes to slow down, revealing that the car’s third brake light was not functioning.

A traffic stop was initiated and contact made with the driver, identified as Victor Santos, 35, of 28 Harris Ave. in Cranston. Santos said he was coming from Providence and was going for pizza in Warwick.

While speaking with Santos, the officer reported that he detected an odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle. When asked if there was any cannabis in the car, Santos reportedly said that he had just smoked some. When asked, Santos said that there were no other drugs in the vehicle.

A search of the vehicle found a void, where a small plastic bag containing suspected crack cocaine was found. A body search of Santos then revealed another bag containing suspected crack cocaine. He was then taken into custody and transported to police headquarters. At the station, the substances tested positive for cocaine.

Santos was charged with Possession of a schedule I-V drug and held to appear before the Bail Commissioner.
